"…the sum of a life": Charles Dickens at Two Hundred
Through March 2012
"Trifles make the sum of life" remarks David Copperfield in Dickens's autobiographical novel of that name, and his observation illuminates both Dickens's writing and this exhibit. Just as he carefully constructed his intricate plots and memorable characters from the most minor details, this exhibit presents rare and unique ephemeral materials such as ticket stubs, playbills, and original letters together with more traditional resources to offer some indication of the life of this extraordinary writer.
Organized by Jonathan H. Grossman, UCLA Department of English, and Dawn Setzer, UCLA Library Communications, this exhibit draws its contents from UCLA Library Special Collections as well as other UCLA Library and University of California holdings. It is on view in the Lobby Gallery.
An afternoon of events will celebrate Dickens's birthday on Tuesday, February 7:
- Noon-1 p.m.: "The Passengers of History in A Tale of Two Cities," illustrated talk by Jonathan Grossman. Humanities 193. Light lunch available
- 1:30-2 p.m.: Exhibit viewing with the organizers. Research Library Lobby Gallery
- 3-5 p.m.: Great Expectations, screening of David Lean's Academy Award-winning 1946 film. Humanities 193
